The Daily Happenings
In short: every morning the realm has a paper: what the season's heroes did yesterday. Who fell, and to what; who slew a boss, or the dragon; who won a duel; which beast earned a name, and who put an end to one; who honoured a cairn; and what the realm's own heroes were up to. Then the day's omen, a rumour and a line of gossip. Everyone reads the same paper, so do something worth printing: tomorrow it could be you.
How it works
Reading it
At dawn, after your own chronicle, The realm yesterday shows the paper's lead headline. Read the rest opens the other headlines, the rumour and the gossip, and Listen has the narrator read it: he tells the kind of news (a fall, a slaying, a duel), never the names or the places, which stay on screen. Listen appears once his lines for the paper are recorded; until then the paper is read on screen. Later in the day the whole paper is in your journal, under Realm.
Headlines about your own hero are marked you, and the paper says "Your name is in the paper".
When a season ends, its last paper waits on the screen between seasons, The last Daily Happenings: the one telling of the season's last day, printed once the season is over, without an omen or a rumour, since the day it would have come out never came (see Seasons). Only those who played the season see it there.
What makes the paper
A paper holds at most 5 headlines, the biggest news first, and it keeps them varied: at most 2 of one kind (a fall and a defeat at a lair are one kind, as a boss and the dragon are), and at most 2 naming the same hero, yours included, so nobody fills the paper.
| News | Weight | What it takes |
|---|---|---|
| The dragon slain | most | Slaying Ashvarr. |
| A boss slain | high | Slaying any other boss; the higher up the ladder, the bigger the news. |
| A nemesis slain | high | Slaying a beast that killed a hero (see Nemesis); slaying your own is revenge, and a little bigger still. |
| A nemesis born | middle | A beast killed a hero on a hunt and stayed. The fall itself is told this way. |
| A duel | middle | A duel between two players' heroes (see Crossings and cairns): bigger for a rematch, or when the lower level wins. |
| A defeat at a lair | lower | Losing to a boss. |
| A fall | lower | A hero's first fall of the day on a hunt or to a quest's foe; bigger when the killer had a name. |
| A cairn honoured | small | Paying your respects at another hero's cairn. |
| A rival hero's milestone | less | A boss slain, a defeat at a lair, a fall, or a level of 5, 10, … reached by one of the realm's own heroes. |
A headline about one of the season's rival heroes is labelled hero of the realm: they are characters of the game, never players. They weigh a little less than the same deed by a player's hero, so in a busy realm the players' news comes first, and in a quiet one the rivals keep the paper from being empty.
Under the headlines: a rumour of the great beast just beyond the furthest any hero of the season has gone (the dragon, once someone has slain it, even if they have since begun again), and a line of gossip from Oakhaven. The paper's heading names the day's omen.
A season's first day has no paper: there is no yesterday to tell of. A day with nothing to print prints a quiet paper that says the criers have no news. That is all it says: a hero who keeps out of the paper may have fallen, or slain a boss, and the paper will not pretend otherwise.
Keeping your name out
In Settings, Your name in the Daily Happenings set to Off keeps your heroes out of the paper, for your whole account:
- your own deeds (a fall, a boss, a duel won, a nemesis slain, a cairn honoured) are left out;
- where you are only the other side (the loser of a duel, the hero a nemesis killed, the one whose cairn someone honoured) you are "a traveller";
- the papers already printed are reprinted without you.
Only a hero's name is ever printed, never anything about your account. Deleting your account takes your heroes out of every paper, the ones already printed included (see Getting started).
Tips
- The paper loves a dragon, a boss, a revenge on a nemesis and a rematch. A fall is news too, if a small one.
- Paying your respects at a cairn is the gentlest way into the paper.
- Read the rumour: it points at the beast the realm is waiting for someone to face.
