Your data
Contents
In short: the game never asks who you are. Your account is a random code, not a name or an email address. It keeps what it needs to run and to get better, shows no adverts, tracks you nowhere else and sells nothing. In Settings you can turn play statistics off, download a copy of your data, and delete everything at once.
This page says it in plain words. The privacy policy is the full version, and where the two differ, the policy is right.
What the game keeps, and why
| What | Why |
|---|---|
| A random account identifier | So the game knows you when you come back. It is made on your device, the first time you open the game. |
| Your recovery code | Your way back to your account on another device, and a way to delete it on the web. |
| Google's identifier, only if you link Google | So signing in with Google brings you back. Google's sign-in also shows us your email address, name and picture: we throw them away at once and never keep them. |
| Your heroes and everything they do | This is the game itself: their gear, gold, map, quests, journal, meetings with other heroes and honours. |
| Play statistics | A short list of events (a turn spent, a death, a level gained, a boss slain…) so we can tell whether the game is fun and fair. Read mostly as totals, never used for advertising. Turn them off in Settings → Share play statistics, and what was counted goes too. |
| The reports you send, and errors | What you write in a bug report, with what the game adds so we can find the problem (your hero's state, your device and browser, your last few actions). |
| Where to send messages, only if you ask | Your browser's delivery address and your time zone, so a message never comes at night where you are. |
| Your IP address, briefly | To stop anyone hammering the server or guessing recovery codes. It is held in memory while you play and for up to 20 minutes after, never written to the game's database. |
The game never asks for your name, email address, phone number, age, contacts, photos or location, and there is nothing to buy in the game, so no payment details either.
What other players see
Other players see your hero's name, which the game generates (nobody types one), and what that hero does in the realm:
- when your heroes meet on the road: a duel, a shared story, or passing by;
- on the cairn where your hero fell, and when your hero pays respects at theirs;
- in the name of a monster that killed your hero and lived (a nemesis);
- in the season's hall of heroes and the news of the realm;
- in the Daily Happenings, the paper at dawn. To keep your heroes out of it, and out of the papers already printed, set Settings → Your name in the Daily Happenings to Off.
In Settings you can also keep out of duels, and on the road you can ignore a hero so that you never meet again. Other players never see your account, your recovery code or anything about you outside the game.
What we never do
- No advertising and no tracking. The game has no adverts, no advertising identifier and nothing that follows you across other apps or websites.
- Nothing sold. We never sell or rent data about you, and share it with no advertiser or data broker.
- No cookies of our own, and no consent banner. The game keeps your account identifier, your settings and a few notes of what you have already seen or closed in your browser's storage, on your device. None of it is there for statistics, advertising or tracking, so there is nothing to ask your consent for; the privacy policy lists each item. Google's sign-in loads only when you tap to sign in with Google, and then sets one small cookie of its own on the game's address.
A few companies help us run the game: Hetzner, which hosts our servers in Germany; Cloudflare, which sits in front of them and keeps our encrypted backups in the EU; your browser's push service if you ask for messages; GitHub, where the team may copy a bug report (without your account); and Microsoft, whose Microsoft 365 holds our support mailbox in the UK. The privacy policy names each one and what it sees.
This website
This website sets no cookies, runs no analytics and no scripts, and loads nothing from anywhere else: its fonts and pictures come from here. Cloudflare sits in front of it, as it does the game, and sets no cookies either. It is hosted by Hetzner in Germany, on a server of our own: its access log (your IP address, browser, the page and the time) is kept 14 days, and it keeps no visitor statistics.
Seeing your data, or deleting it
- See it, or take a copy: most of it is in the game already: your heroes, your journal, your reports and our replies. For all of it, open the Hero tab, then Settings, and choose Download my data: you get a file of what the game keeps about your account (your sign-in secrets are listed, not shown).
- Delete it: in the game, open the Hero tab, then Settings, and at the bottom Delete account…. Without the game, use your recovery code at play.legacyoftheashendragon.com/delete-account. If you only ever signed in with Google and do not know your code, sign in with Google in the game and delete from Settings.
- Stop play statistics: turn off Settings → Share play statistics. Nothing more is counted, and what was counted so far is deleted.
- Everything else (correcting something, a question, any other request): ask us. The easiest way is the speech bubble in the game, because it tells us which account is yours without you revealing anything else. You can also write to support@legacyoftheashendragon.com; we may then ask you to confirm from inside the game. We answer within a month.
Keep your recovery code private. Anyone who has it can play your heroes or delete your account, and nobody from eGuys will ever ask you for it.
How long things are kept
Your account, your heroes and their history stay until you delete them. Your bug reports go 12 months after we close them, the automatic error reports 12 months after the error was last seen, and play statistics as soon as you turn them off. Deleting your account takes it all at once: your heroes, their history and honours, your statistics, your reports and your message settings. A few copies take longer to go:
- the game's backups: 14 days on the server, and encrypted copies kept elsewhere for up to 12 months (if one is ever restored, your account is deleted again straight away);
- a list of deleted accounts, only the random identifier and the date, for 13 months, which is what deletes an account again after a restore (the same list notes when an account turned play statistics off, so a restore cannot bring its statistics back);
- the server's logs, which overwrite themselves as they fill up: a few days to a few weeks, depending on how busy the game is, or until the game is next updated;
- your emails to support, two years after your last one (or sooner if you ask);
- copies of your bug reports in our issue tracker, without your account or hero ids: 12 months after we close them, like the reports in the game (the team deletes the ones that are due about once a month), or sooner if you ask us to delete one, quoting its reference (such as GD-12).
Lines already written in other players' journals that name your hero stay as they were written. The privacy policy has every period.
