The game
A few minutes a day, a season to reach the dragon
Legacy of the Ashen Dragon is a fantasy role-playing game played in daily turns, in the spirit of the old bulletin-board door games: you visit once a day, spend your turns, and come back tomorrow to see what changed.
Each day brings 20 turns. Walk the wilds around the town of Oakhaven, hunt what you find, search ruins, follow rumours and take on quests. When the turns run out, the day is done. Nobody can race ahead by playing all night.
The realm changes each morning: a new omen, fresh rumours, a paper full of yesterday's deeds. A season lasts 12 weeks. Out in the wilds, six lairs wait, the last of them Ashvarr's, the Ashen Dragon's.
How you play
One day, from dawn to dusk
A day is a small, complete adventure. This is how it goes.
-
1 · Dawn
Read the chronicle
Each morning the game writes a short chronicle of your yesterday, with the day's omen and the realm's paper. Press Listen and an old storyteller reads it to you.
-
2 · Morning
Set out
Press Set out and step into the day from wherever you slept: the inn at Oakhaven, a waystation, or a camp in the wilds. The land goes on forever, and the further you walk, the tougher and richer it gets.
-
3 · The day
Hunt and explore
Every step and every hunt costs a turn, and you have 20. Search ruins, pray at shrines, follow rumours, face what the road throws at you. Up to 5 turns you leave unused carry into tomorrow.
-
4 · Before a fight
Choose a stance
Boldly, Steadily or Warily. A fight is settled in one go, so you choose how to meet it beforehand. The right stance takes the sting out of a monster's trait, and at a boss it can decide everything.
-
5 · Midday
Rest at an inn
A bed, a potion, a new blade: they cost gold, never turns. Oakhaven's bank keeps your gold safe, because the fallen drop some of what they carry.
-
6 · Evening
Sit by the fire
When the turns are spent, or you have fallen, the evening opens: by the fire at an inn, in camp out in the wilds, or where you fell. At an inn the keeper will play dice for a few coins, and the evening foretells tomorrow's omen.
-
7 · Night
Give your word
Choose a rumour to chase tomorrow. At dawn it heads your list, and the next chronicle says whether you kept your word.
What makes it different
A small world that remembers
Every hero plays alone, and every hero shares the realm.
-
Omens
Most days have a character, the same for every hero. A Blood Moon makes the wilds fiercer and richer. A Harvest Fair makes beds and potions cheap. The Long Fog loses travellers and buries treasure. Two days a week are quiet, and each evening tells you what tomorrow holds.
More about omens -
The nemesis
Fall to a monster and it keeps the gold you dropped, grows stronger and takes a name: Greymaw, Taker of Maren's Purse. It prowls where you fell for a few days. Go back and win it all back, before another hero does.
More about the nemesis -
The Daily Happenings
Every morning the realm prints a paper: who fell, who slew a boss, who won a duel, which beast earned a name. Everyone reads the same one, so do something worth printing. Rather stay out of it? One switch in Settings.
More about the paper -
Crossings and duels
Other players' heroes walk the same land. Meet one and duel for a little gold, trade stories, or walk on. Nobody dies in a duel. Where heroes fall, cairns rise, and those who pass can pay their respects.
More about crossings and duels -
Rival heroes
The realm has heroes of its own, always labelled as such, never players. They climb, fall and rise again. One of them is your rival, racing you to the dragon, and the dawn tells you how the race stands.
More about rival heroes -
Six bosses, the last a dragon
Six bosses wait in lairs further and further from Oakhaven, one every five levels, up to 30. The last is Ashvarr, the Ashen Dragon. As you climb, the dragon writes to you: letters sealed in ash-grey wax, amused at first, then afraid.
More about the bosses -
A narrator
An old, weary storyteller reads the big moments aloud: a hard fight, a boss's challenge, yesterday's tale at dawn. The dragon has a voice of its own for its letters. Recorded once and shipped with the game; turn it down or off in Settings.
More about the narrator -
Seasons and Rebirth
The realm runs in seasons of 12 weeks, four a year. Each season everyone starts fresh; your honours stay with you. Slay the dragon and you may begin again at level 1, keeping your name and your honour.

Before you set out
Is it free?
Yes. There is nothing to buy, no adverts and no subscription. Gold and items exist only in the game.
What can I play it on?
Any modern browser, on a phone, a tablet or a computer: open play.legacyoftheashendragon.com. On Android you can add it to your home screen, and it opens like an app. Apps for Android and iPhone are coming to Google Play and the App Store.
Do I need an account?
There is nothing to sign up for. The game makes your account the first time you join a season: no name, no email address, no password. You get a recovery code instead: write it down, because it is your way back to your hero on another device. Where the game offers it, you can also link a Google account.
How long does a day take?
A few minutes. You have 20 turns, and a fight is settled in a moment. Shopping, resting and talking are free, so you can linger if you like, but when the turns are gone, the day is done.
What if I miss a day?
Your hero waits for you. A missed day fills your turn bank, so you come back to 5 extra turns, and the chronicle tells you what happened while you were away.
What happens to my data?
The game keeps what it needs to run and to get better, and nothing more. It never asks who you are, shows no adverts, tracks you nowhere else and sells nothing. Your data says it in plain words; the privacy policy has every detail.
